How to Know When Your Loved One Needs Memory Care

by Via Elegante / Monday, 15 August 2022 / Published in Assisted Living
memory care

Memory care homes have grown in popularity due to the rise in the number of seniors in America. Surprisingly, the percentage of senior housing occupancy decreased in 2021. According to NIC MAP Vision, senior housing occupancy in the United States reached a record low of 78.8% in the first quarter of 2021. That said, memory care homes are designed to help fulfill the unique needs of dementia patients. Nevertheless, age-related cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, does not necessarily have such a dramatic impact. Rather, indications and symptoms appear gradually over time, making it difficult to determine whether memory care is genuinely required. If your loved one shows any of the following symptoms, it may be time to consider enrolling them in a memory care center.

Changes In Behavior

Some dementia patients may begin to behave significantly differently. A formerly independent senior may suddenly become fearful of driving, deny social invitations, and withdraw. They may have previously been particular about their appearance and may start to care less about daily hygiene or how to handle simple duties such as washing and hairstyle and are too ashamed to ask (for help). A senior may also become more irritated or agitated.

Concerns About Safety

Many persons endure substantial personality changes as dementia advances, as well as disorientation and agitation, which can lead to violence or violent threats. If your loved one exhibits these symptoms and you are worried about your own or others’ safety in your home, it may be advisable for your loved one to go to memory care. Memory care facilities are experienced with these symptoms and can assist your loved ones in working through their feelings more productively.

Frequent Wandering

Your loved ones may wander if they wake up at night or get confused and disoriented. Wandering can be incredibly dangerous since your loved one will walk without knowing where they are or how to return home. It can put older adults at risk and expose them to severe conditions in the winter and summer. Memory care residences are safe and frequently feature enclosed outdoor areas to prevent your loved one from straying away without a caregiver.

Unexplained Physical Changes

Weight changes, posture changes, and mobility issues might signal that your loved one requires further support. It is possible that your loved one has forgotten to eat, or they have forgotten they have already eaten and are eating again. Slow motions might indicate bewilderment or disorientation. Memory care facilities will regularly monitor your loved one’s diet and wellbeing to ensure that they eat properly.

If you’ve noticed any of the above signs in your aging loved one, it might be time to enroll them in a memory care facility. Are you searching for a memory care facility for your loved one? Contact VIA Elegante Assisted Living today to sign them up for a memory care facility that offers proper care for seniors.
